SUN SHINES ON RIDERS AT GRAND RODEO
Written by:
Police Agent Michael Lockwood

The Baldwinsville Police Department and the Baldwinsville Optimist Club, working in co-operation with Liberty Mutual Insurance Syracuse & Camillus Offices completed their Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program on Saturday May 22nd with the Grand Rodeo.

The program was originated in 1980 to teach and remind the area youth of bicycle and safety practices. It has been run every other year since its start at the Baldwinsville area elementary schools. Since the inception of the Helmet Law, a priority has been placed at giving away new helmets to children who either did not have a helmet, the helmet did not properly fit or it was damaged. During the program this year, over 100 helmets were given out at no cost to the child or their family.

The students after attending a safety assembly were encouraged to participate in a bicycle rodeo. They would ride their bicycles through a course, which would challenge their safe riding skills. The individuals would be scored and the winners would receive prizes. The top three place winners from each school were then invited to participate in the Grand Rodeo and compete for three brand new bicycles.

Baldwinsville Police Officers went into each Baldwinsville Elementary School and spoke with approximately 2000 students at the safety assembly’s & over 200 of the students participated in the after school bicycle rodeo’s. There were 53 contestants that qualified to participate in the Grand Rodeo and fortunately, the weather cooperated and we had a beautiful sunny day for the competition. Every contestant did an excellent job and all the scores were very close, but at the end of the day there were three top scores. They were, Grace Bell (McNamara), Madeline Bush ( Elden), and Nathan Cronk (Elden). The three winners accompanied by their parents were then escorted to the Target Store, Route 31, where they picked out their new bicycle, courtesy of the Optimist Club.

This community service program is a combined effort by numerous groups. Many thanks have to go to the Parks and Recreation Department of the town of Van Buren. They assisted with two helpers at each and every rodeo. The Baldwinsville Police Explorers also assisted the youth at the rodeos. It was Liberty Mutual Insurance’s first year as a co-sponsor and they supplied numerous people to the rodeos and contributed towards the purchase of helmets and participation prizes. The last to thank are the Optimist Club. It was their idea and concern with helping the community that began this program more then 30 years ago. Their members were at each rodeo and the club sponsored the bicycle give-away. In closing I would like to thank the parents of all the children, taking the time and effort out of their busy schedules and putting it into the care and safety of their children and we look forward to conducting the program again in May, 2012.
