KIDS LEARN SAFE BIKE RIDING CAN BE FUN

2008 Baldwinsville Police/Baldwinsville Optimist Bicycle Safety Grand Rodeo Winners L-R Paul Owens (McNamara), Paul Hunt (Optimist), Matt Feustel (Reynolds), Agent Tom LeRoy,
Bailey Austin (Reynolds)

The Baldwinsville Police Department along with the Baldwinsville Optimist Club completed their Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program on May 17, 2008 with the Grand Rodeo.

The program was originated in 1980 to teach and remind area youth of bicycle and safety practices. It has been run every other year since its start at the Baldwinsville area elementary schools. Since the inception of the Helmet Law a priority has been placed at giving away new helmets to children who either did not have a helmet, the helmet was not properly fit or it was damaged. During the program this year over 100 new helmets were given out at no cost to the child or their family.

The students after attending a safety assembly were encouraged to participate in a bicycle rodeo. They would ride their bicycles through a course, which would challenge their safe riding skills. The individuals would be scored and the winners would receive prizes. The top three place winners would be invited to the Grand Rodeo and compete for 3 brand new bicycles.

All six individual rodeos were completed identifying 57 students eligible to participate in the Grand Rodeo. On Saturday, 47 participated in the Grand Rodeo which was held at the Word of Life Church parking lot. The competition was so close it resulted in 4 riders tied for first place. After a ride-off the three winners were, Paul Owens(4th grade McNamara), Matt Feustal (3rd grade Reynolds), and Bailey Austin(2nd grade Reynolds). The three winners accompanied by their parents were then escorted to Target on Rt.31 Clay, where they picked out their new bicycles.

This community service program is a combined effort by numerous groups. Many thanks have to go the Parks and Recreation of both the towns of Lysander and Van Buren. They assisted with 2 helpers at each and every rodeo. The Baldwinsville Police Explorers also assisted the youth at the rodeos. The last to thank are the Baldwinsville Optimist Club. It was their idea and concern with helping the community that begun this program more than 25 years ago. Led by Paul Hunt their members were at each rodeo and the club sponsored the bicycle give-away. In closing I would like to thank the parents of all the children, taking the time and effort out of their busy schedules and putting it into the care and safety of their children.
